Hammersmith Flyover Advance Warning

TfL is writing to residents to let them know about forthcoming works involving night-time closures and weekend working on Hammersmith Flyover from Monday 28 October 2013. The work will take up to 18 months and is the second and final phase of strengthening of the flyover following the first phase which was completed last year. The flyover will not be closed during peak times.

In December 2011 TfL found that steel cables on a number of the flyover’s 16 spans had deteriorated significantly, due to corrosion caused by water seeping into the structure. This led to its temporary closure just before Christmas and subsequent urgent strengthening work on the worst affected spans allowing the flyover to fully reopen to traffic in May 2012.

Work is now required to complete the strengthening of the remaining spans and undertake essential planned maintenance to ensure that the structure remains safe and usable for years to come.

All night-time closures will be between 10.30pm and 5am.

London 2012 - Traffic Restrictions

Transport for London have announced that "Drivers, pedestrians and cyclists will have to change the way they travel in and around [Knightsbridge] during the 2012 Games". They are not kidding, it looks like the disruption to normal traffic flow will be extensive and unrelenting during the Olympics and Paralympics.

The A4 has been designated part of the Olympic Route Network and extensive restrictions will be in place along its entire length. The map below gives a snapshot of the changes... click on the image to download the entire TFL document.

Some of the major restrictions:

  • One lane either way on the A4 is reserved for Games vehicles 6am to midnight
  • Multiple pedestrian crossings suspended
  • Cromwell Road to Knightsbridge: Right turns restricted
  • Sloane Street: No exit from Sloane St to Knightsbridge
  • Belgrave Square to Hyde Park Corner: Grosvenor Crescent will be closed at the Hyde Park Corner end
  • Hyde Park Corner to Buckingham Palace: Constitution Hill closed to all non Games traffic
