McDonald's Licensing Alert

URGENT LATE NIGHT LICENSING ALERT

McDonald's in Brompton Road have lodged a Licence Application with RBKC to allow them to stay open until 2.00AM every night and for earlier opening from 5.00AM daily.

The Knightsbridge Association (KA) is extremely concerned by this application which would set a catastrophic precedent for the whole of Brompton Road, making it even more a 24 hour destination.

If you share our concerns, PLEASE OBJECT TO THE APPLICATION by the deadline of Friday 4 April 2014. Rejection of an Application depends very much on the number, relevance and strength of objections from individuals.

To object, enter http://tinyurl.com/bromptonroad in your web site then scroll down to the bottom of the Application and click on SUBMIT REPRESENTATION FORM.

Alternatively write to RBKC Licensing Team, Council Offices, 37 Pembroke Road, London W8 6PW. Please send a copy of your representation to the KA at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or to the Knightsbridge Association at 6 Montpelier Street, SW7 1EZ

When making a representation, draw on any personal experience or other evidence of how extended opening hours would lead to additional public nuisance. These might include:-

  • extra noise from slamming car doors etc in nearby residential streets.

  • additional rubbish on the public highway.

  • attracting late night drinkers in search of food, leading to more anti-social behaviour, e.g. urine, vomit, etc on doorsteps.

The principal ground for objection is that the extensions will cause significant additional public nuisance, contrary to licensing objectives. Please use your own words and remember that the only way for the council to appreciate the strength of local feeling is in the number of separate objections they receive.

Do encourage your neighbours to make a representation.

Licensing Report - February 2014

Polish Hearth Club:  WCC imposed a number of conditions and constraints on the Club's  License Application for extended hours following representations from KA and neighbouring RAs.  The Club has decided to appeal the Licensing Committee's decision and KA has indicated its willingness to support WCC in defence of its decision.

Buddha Bar: following representations by KA and local residents, Buddha Bar's License application for extended hours was rejected.

Chapati & Karak: This is a new outlet on the elevated section of the Brompton Road and KA are examining the License requirements for tables and chairs on the pavement for this and other premises in the locality.

KA is to request a meeting with WCC and RBKC Councillors to discuss the bar / cafe / restaurant monoculture that has been allowed to proliferate along the Brompton Road.

Response to Licensing Deregulation Consultation

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport is proposing a reform of activities currently classed as "regulated entertainment" in Schedule One of the 2003 Licensing Act. The consultation seeks views on the removal in certain circumstances of the requirement for a licence in England and Wales to host a performance of a play, an exhibition of a film, an indoor sporting event, a performance of live music, any playing of recorded music, or a performance of dance.

The consultation period ran from 10 September to 3 December 2011. Further information can be found at the DCMS website.

Our response to the consulation is as follows:

Alcohol Licensing and the Knightsbridge Association

In recent years, the KA’s energies have been focused on combating the encroachment of late night opening on the north side of Brompton Road. This has traditionally been an upmarket shopping area that has operated during the day and closed by early evening.

But since 2009 there has been an influx of new restaurants, which have applied to open into the early hours of the morning and seem determined to turn our area into a late night entertainment destination similar to the West End.

The majority of the restaurants along the raised pavement area are now Middle Eastern owned. The most troublesome have been Al Arez at 128 Brompton Road and the Mamounia Lounge at No 136.
