Visit to Bentley Priory - May 1st

In the summer of 1940, a handsome country house set among beautiful gardens on the northern heights overlooking London was arguably the most important building in the world. The house was Bentley Priory, the Headquarters of Fighter Command. It was from this idyllic spot that its Commander, Sir Hugh Dowding, directed his men in the Battle of Britain. Designed by Sir John Soane, Bentley Priory is one of Britain’s most significant buildings in view of its architectural importance, the social history it represents and, particularly, its pivotal role in the Second World War.

The Museum exhibitions highlight the Battle of Britain pilots and those who worked in the Filter Room and informs visitors of the great events that were played out at the Priory over past centuries. It focuses particularly on the huge debt that all of us who enjoy freedom today owe to those who took part in the struggle of 1940.
